Acteur d'origine pathan1, il est né à Delhi le 2 novembre 1965 dans une famille musulmane, originaire de Peshawar (Pakistan). Ses parents sont arrivés à Gurgaon (Inde) avant la partition des Indes en 1947. Shahrukh Khan a obtenu une maîtrise de communication à l'université '"Jamia Milia Islamia" de Delhi. Le 25 octobre 1991, il épouse Gauri, malgré la forte réticence des parents de celle-ci qui voient d'un mauvais œil ce mariage entre musulman et hindoue. La famille de Gauri finit par accepter Shahrukh et le couple aura deux enfants : un fils, Aryan Khan, né en 1997 et une fille, Suhana Khan née en 2000.

 

Shahrukh a beaucoup contribué à la réputation du cinéma indien en tant qu'acteur mais également comme producteur. Après avoir produit quelques films sous le label "Dreamz Unlimited" avec Juhi Chawla et le réalisateur Aziz Mirza (Chalte chalte), il fonde sa propre société de production nommée "Red Chillies Entertainement", qu'il dirige avec sa femme. Il vient également de se porter acquéreur avec Juhi Chawla, dans le cadre de l'Indian Premier League, de l'équipe de cricket de Kolkata, les Kolkata Knight Riders.

2007 marque également son grand retour à la télévision qui l'avait rendu célèbre à la fin des années 80 avec la série Fauji ; il anime en 2007 Kaun Banega Crorepati?, la version indienne de Qui veut gagner des Millions ? et reçoit deux récompenses comme meilleur animateur : le 7th Indian Telly Awards et le The Global Indian TV Honours, et depuis mai 2008 il anime Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain ?, version indienne de Êtes-vous plus fort qu'un élève de 10 ans ?.
